Everton: John Cross suggests Neal Maupay should be fined as Brentford loanee sparks discussion
Everton loanee Neal Maupay should potentially be fined for his “wind-up” antics on the pitch, according to the Mirror’s John Cross.
The verdict comes after the on-loan Brentford striker reportedly taunted Manchester City ace Kyle Walker about his children during their recent match [Daily Mail, 6 February].
Maupay also hit the headlines shortly before that clash after an altercation with Tottenham midfielder James Maddison during their meeting in January.
“Maupay’s antics have caused plenty of discussion among Premier League players about what crosses the line and what is acceptable,” Cross wrote for the Mirror (page 56, 16 February). “WAGS, with little smart remarks is one thing. Fashion sense is also fair game. Children are not.
“In the NFL, there is even criteria for taunting opponents in the rule book. ‘The use of baiting or taunting acts or words that engender ill will between teams.’
“There is a 15-yard penalty for offences together with fines of £9,000 and £13,000 for a second time.”
Everton loanee causing a stir
Maupay is causing quite the stir at Goodison Park for various reasons, with his wind-up antics undoubtedly top of that list.
The striker infuriated Maddison upon copying the Tottenham star’s celebration after scoring against them, although that decision backfired when the North London club fought back to secure a 3-2 victory.
Maupay then caused outrage from another England star in Walker less than a week later, but again his side were the victim of another Premier League defeat.

However, on a very positive note for the striker, he did also manage to find the back of the net against Manchester City, with Maupay’s goalscoring issues from Everton well and truly behind him.
The forward looks at home with the Bees, having previously shone there before his move to Goodison Park. He is, of course, still an Everton player, but his future is very much up in the air, with Maupay finding the back of the net just once from his 32 Toffees appearances.
