Roy Keane rages at Everton after what he saw in loss v Manchester City
Roy Keane believes Everton played like a “lower league team” during their 2-0 loss to Manchester City in the Premier League last week.
Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast (16 February), the panel was discussing Pep Guardiola’s team and their dominance of games both domestically and in Europe after their 3-1 win over Copenhagen in midweek.
But Keane admitted that he watched their win over the Toffees last weekend in the Premier League and felt like a lot of teams now set up just to stop them and compared it to watching a lower league team just trying to survive, rather than two teams in the same league.
“They played Everton last week, and it’s not just Everton, but they looked like they were a lower league team who had gone there in a cup match and were just hanging in there all game, yet you are going you are in the same league as them,” he said.
Everton have to play to their strengths
It’s very easy for an ex-player of the calibre of Keane to not understand what it’s like to play for an underdog in a game where absolutely nobody is giving you a chance.
The team is one of the best defensive units in the league right now, and the number of clean sheets prove that too, but City are a team that are literally the favourites in every single game they play no matter the opposition.
So for Everton a draw, especially away from home, would be seen as a good result and with the situation with the league table and points deduction right now would have made it even better.
Obviously everyone would prefer to see their team attacking and looking to compete with everyone for an entertaining game, but fans would definitely understand that you have to play a certain way.
Keane is being overly harsh here, which is no shock to anyone really, but Everton did what they could and after a “masterclass” in the first-half they weren’t far away from securing a well-deserved point.
