Alan Pardew and Graeme Souness slam Everton loanee Mason Holgate after Sheffield United controversy

Alan Pardew and Graeme Souness have slated Everton loanee Mason Holgate live on air for his red-card challenge during Sheffield United’s 5-0 loss to Brighton on Sunday 18 February.

The 27-year-old centre-back is currently on loan away from Goodison Park, switching life at St Mary’s Stadium with Southampton for Bramall Lane in the Premier League.

His start at United seems to have started just as poorly as his six-month spell with the Saints, though, being criticised for his shocking foul on Kaoru Mitoma.

Speaking live via talkSPORT on Monday (19 February, 10:28am), Pardew said: “Well, it was awful. Chris [Wilder] must have been asking, ‘What are you doing?’.

“How the referee hasn’t sent him off straight away, I don’t know. He may have been obscured from the severity, because it’s not so much the first part, but the follow-through. The Brighton players knew it was a sending-off. He had to go; it was awful.”

Souness added: “It was an awful challenge because he could’ve injured himself as well. There’s every chance he’s going to injure himself just as much as Mitoma.”

Will Mason Holgate ever play for Everton again?

Holgate could have very possibly played his last-ever game at Goodison Park following his erratic actions for the Blades.

With the side already struggling to stay afloat in the Premier League this season, the Everton loanee will have lowered the squad morale hugely, with United going on to ship five goals.

The 27-year-old should be one of the wiser heads in the dressing room, a player that the youngsters can look up to, but he has yet to showcase that across either of his loan spells this season.

Everton

Despite over 150 Everton appearances to his name, the defence prowess of duo Jarrad Branthwaite and James Tarkowski leaves no space for him at Goodison Park.

Even when one of the aforementioned pair is unavailable, Michael Keane and Ben Godfrey are much further up Sean Dyche’s pecking order, and after his cameo against Brighton, rightly so.

In other Everton news, an update has emerged on a Goodison Park-linked Chelsea ace, with a summer move on the cards.
