Everton: Andy Townsend shares ‘colossal’ relegation verdict live on talkSPORT amid appeal claim

Andy Townsend has claimed the situation would be unthinkable if Everton are relegated this season, hinting that they would struggle to recover should they go down.

This has come amid the wait to hear the result of their appeal against the ten-point deduction, as it was questioned what would happen if they were unsuccessful.

With the new Bramley-Moore Dock stadium being built ready for the 2025-26 season, Everton could find serious trouble should they lose their Premier League status between now and then.

Speaking live on talkSPORT [10 February, 07:10], Townsend shared: “I think if they don’t get any points back then they are where they are.

“They’ve been in this situation before, they’ve been panicking and struggling, and they’ve had to scrap and battle away to keep their heads above water.

“I always feel that if it’s becoming too regular when you’re at the bottom of the league, eventually it catches you. For some, when they get relegated they can’t find a way back.

“It’s unthinkable for Everton at the minute, with the new stadium and everything else that’s going on around them. For them to be playing Championship football next season would be colossal for them. I’m not sure how they would recover.”

Could Everton get relegated from the Premier League?

If Everton are relegated this season as a result of their points deduction, there would be outrage on Merseyside aimed towards the Premier League – but it has become a very real possibility.

The initial ten-point deduction is currently the subject of an appeal which the club expect to hear news from soon, but with a second charge looming, things could still get worse.

Jeff Stelling has previously fumed at the length of time taken to provide the club with the result of their appeal, with further concerns rising with each passing day about the possible outcome.

This process has also been criticised by many pundits due to the constant confusion which has affected the mentalities of teams down towards the bottom of the league.

Given the situation with the ownership and financial concerns at Goodison Park, relegation to the Championship could be detrimental to the future of the club, more than just on the pitch.
