Everton: Andy Townsend slams Dominic Calvert-Lewin on talkSPORT after what happened v Crystal Palace
Andy Townsend has slammed Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin for his performance in the 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace, claiming he has never convinced him as a goalscorer.
Calvert-Lewin turned in yet another frustrating display in the final third at Goodison Park on Monday 19 February, making it 19 games without a goal in all competitions, a run stretching back to October.
Townsend went on to insist that the striker just needs a bit of luck in front of goal, but given how dangerous he can be in the air, Everton should continue to play to his strengths.
Speaking live on talkSPORT [20 February, 06:12], Townsend ranted: “I don’t think Dominic Calvert-Lewin is ever going to be one of those strikers who, going through one-on-one you think ‘This is going to end up in the back of the net.’ He’s never convinced me as a goalscorer.
“What he can do, when that delivery is right, there is no doubt he’s very dangerous in the air. He leaps tremendously well, that’s a really strong part of his game and they’ve got to use that.
“He could do with bundling one in from a couple of yards out, it’s just not happening in that respect. That’s the way it’s going for him.”
When will Dominic Calvert-Lewin score for Everton?
Calvert-Lewin’s form will be a huge concern to all at Goodison Park, not least Sean Dyche, but a bigger concern will be that he is wasting chances you would expect him to score.
A towering header which we have seen him bury so many times in the past was put wide, earning the striker further criticism from Michael Owen and Conor Coady who could not believe that he had let the chance go begging.

Headed chances like that one are where the striker is expected to thrive, as highlighted by Townsend, but recently it looks like nothing will go for him – although he looked considerably stronger alongside Beto.
Perhaps a change of formation could be on the cards to get Calvert-Lewin back to his best, although a permanent exit from Goodison Park has been suggested for the striker to rediscover his best form.
