Rio Ferdinand messages Everton loanee Mason Holgate as Sheffield United man suffered racist abuse

Everton loanee Mason Holgate has received a message from Rio Ferdinand after suffering racist abuse following his red card for Sheffield United against Brighton.

The centre-back was sent off for a horror tackle on Kaoru Mitoma during the Blades’ 5-0 defeat to the Seagulls on Sunday (18 February) with pundits and supporters criticising the 27-yer-old for the poor challenge.

However, the criticism from ‘supporters’ has gone too far, with Holgate taking to Instagram on Tuesday (20 February) to post a video displaying the disgusting racist abuse that he has been sent following his red card at Bramall Lane.

Among a number of messages of support, Rio Ferdinand commented: “Respect bro… outing these racists! Curtain needs to be pulled back on their Instagram handles.”

Abuse of Everton loanee Mason Holgate has been disgusting

Holgate would likely be the first to admit that his tackle in Sunday’s clash was terrible and while supporters are within their rights to be frustrated with the defender, it is ridiculous that this sort of abuse still happens in 2024.

The Everton loanee was just doing his job and while he made a mistake, it is inexcusable that he has had to deal with this sort of abuse just because of a football match. Racism is never okay and it is digesting that some football ‘fans’ think otherwise.

Hopefully, both the Toffees and Sheffield United will gather around the 27-year-old to help him through this difficult period as no human being ever deserves to be treated this way, especially not over a football match.

It is nice to see the likes of Ferdinand and others in the footballing world gather around the Everton loanee. Holgate’s actions could go a long way to helping stamp racism out of the game in which it has no place.
