Everton: Summer exit on cards for Sheffield United loanee Mason Holgate
Mason Holgate may have played his last ever Everton game after dismal loan spells at Sheffield United and Southampton.
The 27-year-old spent the first half of the season on loan at St Mary’s and despite being in the Championship, struggled to become a first-team regular.
However, he still managed to get himself a loan to a Premier League side until the end of the season and things appear to have gone from bad to worse.
Disgraceful Holgate is not at Everton level
The Blades defender lunged in to make a disgusting challenge on Brighton’s Karou Mitoma over the weekend and was deservedly shown a red card for it.
A number of people involved in the game were quick to show their condemnation for what was one of the worst challenges in Premier League history.
Speaking on Premier League Productions’ World Feed, Ekoku, a BBC pundit, said (18 February, 14:14): “That’s an awful challenge. He’s getting sent off. Disgraceful that. Zero sympathy. One of the worst challenges I’ve ever seen. Look at that. It’s terrible. Absolutely no reason for that kind of wildness.”
Everton have to sell Holgate in the summer
His numbers are also extremely underwhelming and showcase why he’s not at the standards of a Premier League side eventually pushing for a top-half finish.
Per fbref, he’s just got a 50 per cent success rate in terms of tackles which is very low compared to Jarrad Branthwaite’s 82.1 per cent.
In comparison to James Tarkowski too, he averages nearly a block less per 90 minutes so it’s evident that he’s not as developed defensively.
While Branthwaite and Tarkowski both enjoy aerial prowess, Holgate’s got a success rate of under 60 per cent with his aerial duels.
Given the fact that he’s also played against inferior strikers for half the season, these numbers are extremely disappointing.
He’s also picking up more yellow cards per 90 minutes in comparison to the two first-choice centre-backs at Everton.
His reckless nature was shown in the game against Brighton and Dyche would rather not have such players in his team.
In terms of recoveries made per 90 minutes as well, he is far away from the two Toffees defenders.
While he averages 3.4, Branthwaite’s racked up an impressive tally of 5.82 while Tarkowski is at 5.

Hopefully, Kevin Thelwell finds a club to sign Holgate in the summer because it’s evident that he’s unlikely to be at Goodison Park next season.
