Everton: Martin Keown hits back at Simon Jordan live on talkSPORT over appeal ‘meltdown’ verdict

Martin Keown and Simon Jordan have clashed live on air after the latter talkSPORT presenter suggested Everton players were facing a “real meltdown” over the ongoing appeal process.

The Toffees have appealed against their 10-point deduction for breaching the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules, but are yet to learn the result of the hearing, much to the frustration of players and fans alike.

The issue was once again a hot topic of discussion on talkSPORT with Jordan questioning why the players would be feeling anxious about the situation.

Speaking on talkSPORT on February (23 February, 10:26) he said: “The appeal was only heard in January, so it doesn’t become instantaneous. You can only control the controllables.

“If these players are in a state of anxiety over an appeal that is only going to make their position better, then they’re going to be in a real meltdown when they realise that there are more penalties coming down the line. They’ll spend their lives in a permanent state of anxiety, it’s nonsense.

“Is it ideal? No. Do you know what your fate is? Yes you do, you know your fate is 10 points so all you’re waiting for is something better. In the meantime, you get on with your job.”

Keown hit back saying: “It might help their opponents though. It might help them, even if you’re Sheffield United, you might think if both those teams Nottingham Forest and Everton are going to lose even more points, you might be brought back into the equation.”

When will Everton learn the result of their Premier League appeal?

While Jordan is right to suggest Everton players’ should be focusing on matters on the pitch, it is incredibly unrealistic to expect players to just not care about big matters off of the field, especially when they could be season-defining.

As Keown suggested, other teams in the relegation battle will be licking their lips at the fact the Toffees could be facing consecutive deductions as it massively boosts their chances of dodging the drop this term.

The appeal has been heard and a decision should surely have been made by now, especially considering how important a matter this is. Supporters and players alike are within their rights to be frustrated by this situation.

It is only exacerbated by the lack of updates around 777 Partners’ takeover with everyone on the blue half of Merseyside completely in the dark over whether the American investment firm will finally acquire Farhad Moshiri’s controlling stake.
