Ex-Everton Scout fumes at Premier League ‘gulf’ as ‘fact of the matter’ verdict shared

Everton loanee Mason Holgate did not have a “very enjoyable” Sheffield United debut, according to ex-Toffees scout Bryan King.

The defender, who is currently on loan at the Blades, lost 5-0 to Aston Villa in his first game for the club earlier this month.

Sheffield United are rock bottom of the Premier League, but King has fumed at the Blades and other “yo-yo clubs” who receive parachute payments when they are relegated to the Championship, with the former scout wanting an immediate change.

Speaking to Goodison News, King said: “He didn’t have a very enjoyable first game did he? What’s the quality of their squad at the moment?

“It’s a situation with Sheffield United, Norwich City, Burnley, they win the Championship, get into the Premier League, back in the Championship, back in the Premier League.

“This is something that has got to be looked at, especially for clubs like Sheffield United, Norwich, Southampton, whoever. Why should they get rewarded with parachute payments for getting relegated?

“It gives them an advantage anyway. It’s an enormous boost for their economy and the way the club is run through the season. They’ve got a headstart over the Millwalls, the Huddersfields, the QPRs, before the season starts. I think that situation has got to be looked at.

“You can’t say they aren’t ready for the Premier League, because if they win the Championship, then they are entitled to be in the Premier League. But the fact of the matter is that there is such a gulf now between the Championship and the Premier League. That’s the major factor.

“We’re calling these clubs yo-yo clubs, they’re up one year and down the next. I think Norwich had a run of about two or three years of it. I just feel that they’ve got to start looking at stopping these parachute payments, because it’s not a level playing field.”

Everton to receive Premier League parachute payment soon?

There is, of course, now the very real chance that Everton could join these clubs in receiving parachute payments.

That is because the Toffees are heavily involved in a Premier League relegation battle, with an unthinkable relegation now on the cards.
