Andy Gray falls for Richard Keys taunt as he defends Everton after draw v Brighton

Andy Gray fell into a trap set by Richard Keys as he leapt to the defence of Everton following their 1-1 draw at Brighton.

Everton took the lead through a superb Jarrad Branthwaite strike in the 73rd minute at the Amex Stadium on Saturday (24 February).

The goal was route one, with Jordan Pickford knocking it long up the field, leading to Keys raising a particular point.

“Is this to be condoned, playing football like this?” he asked on beIN Sports [24 February, 5:08pm].

Co-host Gray quick responded: “What? Sorry, look at the end of it. Richard, there’s no right or wrong way to play football.”

Keys then replied: “I’m being ironic. It’s a good goal.”

Everton denied victory late on by Brighton

While the manner of Everton’s goal was direct, the finish was absolutely superb from Branthwaite – a centre-back, remember.

That looked like being a real turning point in the Toffees’ campaign, even more so when Billy Gilmour was sent off not long after.

However, after some brave defending on the South Coast, Everton conceded to a 94th-minute goal from Lewis Dunk.

As Gray points out – and as Keys is fully aware – there is no right way or wrong way to score a goal.

Branthwaite brilliantly controlled the ball in the box and then found the top-right corner with a shot that had the perfect trajectory.

Everton have scored some nice team goals this season and some more direct goals, but they all count the same as the other.

The positive news is that the Toffees were on the scoresheet on their travels, but the obvious negative is that they just could not hold on.

In other Everton news, Keys also laughed over an incident involving Jordan Pickford against Brighton.
