Everton: Premier League handed slap in the face by new appeal verdict

Everton have been handed back four points following their appeal against their 10-point deduction in a new “slap in the face” for the Premier League, according to Paul Joyce.

Sean Dyche’s side had initially been deducted 10 points by an independent commission for breaching the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules in the 2021-22 season after the league pushed for a 12-point deduction.

But after a new Independent commission heard the Toffees’ appeal, they have reduced Everton’s punishment by four points, a decision which represents a slap in the face to the Premier League according to Times journalist Joyce.

Writing for The Times on Monday (26 February) he said: “Everton have been handed four points back by an independent commission after an appeal against an initial ten-point deduction for breaking spending rules.

“The decision means Sean Dyche’s side move from 17th to 15th position, five points above the relegation zone, and represents a slap in the face for both the original commission which sat last October and the Premier League.”

Have Everton won their point deduction appeal?

The footballing world was united in its belief that 10 points was too steep a penalty for the Toffees in the first place, so it is excellent to see that the new independent commission have agreed and reduced it by four.

Those extra four points could be season-defining for Dyche and his side as it moves them well out of the Premier League’s relegation zone and much closer to safety. While nothing is set in stone, most Evertonians will be breathing a sigh of relief.

Everton boss Sean Dyche
Sean Dyche’s Everton side have faced plenty of challenges both on and off the pitch this season.

Hopefully, similar common sense will prevail when the Toffees’ second charge is discussed and this progress will not be dragged out for quite as long as it has been this time.

Until then, Dyche’s side can enjoy the fact that they have just taken an enormous step towards Premier League safety and moved further away from dropping into the Championship.
