Everton likely to be docked more points amid ‘serious punishment’ verdict

Everton could face a three point deduction for their second Premier League charge for financial breaches, according to finance expert Stefan Borson.

Both the Toffees and Nottingham Forest were charged by the competition for such breaches last month [BBC Sport, 15 January].

It was the second charge handed to the Goodison Park club this season, with their first punishment of 10 points reduced to six.

“We don’t know what the number for Everton is, but we know that the loss for 22/23 was very big and therefore they will still suffer a serious punishment,” said Borson, as per talkSPORT.

“I think you can work on the basis that the starting point will be another six and then you’ll discount for the two years where they’ve already had a penalty and it gets you back to two or maybe three, or maybe one (points deducted).

“I still think they’ll get an additional points deduction, it’s just that it’ll be assessed in the overall context, it’s just that most of their arguments are unlikely to succeed because they’ve already been run and so I think it’s a relatively straight-forward decision for the independent commission on Everton.”

Everton set for further Premier League points deduction?

Everton fans will have been celebrating the decision this week to cut the 10-point deduction to six points, with the club’s appeal a successful one.

But those celebrations could be short-lived given the second Premier League charge hanging over the Merseyside outfit.

The recent outcome has shot the Toffees two places up the standings, from 17th place to 15th place, but they could drop once more if another deduction goes their way.

The only saving grace there, perhaps, is that Nottingham Forest would also more than likely be deducted points, with the City Ground club one of Everton’s main relegation rivals.

Even with the latest appeal outcome, the Goodison Park side are in real danger of dropping down to the Championship.

But their 25 points place them away from the bottom three for now, with Brentford also on 25 points in 16th place and Forest one point behind in 17th.
