Everton: Journalist blasts Premier League over points deduction saga, calls for PSR rule change
The Premier League has made an “absolute mess” of the points deduction situation regarding Everton, according to Dan Bardell.
The Toffees found out on 26 February that their 10-point deduction had been reduced to six points following a successful appeal over the ruling that was handed out by an independent commission in November.
But the Blues are potentially staring down the barrel of another points deduction after being charged for a second time in January for a breach of the league’s profit and sustainability rules (PSR).
Bardell doesn’t understand why the Premier League have handed out two charges in the same season as he called for a change to the PSR rules, which he believes are “not flexible enough” and don’t take enough circumstances into account.
Speaking exclusively to Goodison News, the Sky Sports journalist said: “I just don’t know why everything takes so long. It’s not fair on anyone involved at Everton or the other clubs either.
“For Luton, the landscape has now significantly changed. Why was there such a rush to do this kind of unprecedented 10-point deduction?
“Then it turns out they’ve actually looked at the way the EFL do things. If you’re looking at how the EFL do things, then there are some worries there for the Premier League because the EFL have made a mess of things in the past.
“They’ve taken it down to six points, why not just do that in the first place or delay the decision? It just seemed to take so long and why have Everton got charges for two years’ worth of seasons? They’ve dealt with the one year, now there’s another year and they could get another six or 10 points deducted.
“It just doesn’t make sense why they’re being done at the same time. I don’t understand anything that they’re doing.

“I think the PSR rules need looking at as well, they’re not flexible enough and don’t take enough things into account. It’s so rigid.
“For Everton, it’s just been an absolute mess. Four points puts them in a better position than they were in, but you’ve still got that worry that they’re going to get deducted points again.
“It’s no good for the Premier League, it’s no good for football fans and it’s certainly no good for Everton, Luton, Brentford, Crystal Palace and all those teams either.”
Everton facing yet more uncertainty at Goodison Park
It feels like the bad news at Everton is just never ending after the focus has now turned towards their second charge on the back of their successful appeal to the first points deduction.
The Premier League has handled this situation extremely poorly and it has come under fire from several stakeholders for its decision-making over the past few months.
It’s going to be another anxious wait for the Toffees fans to find out what impact the second charge could have on their battle to remain in the Premier League this season.
