Everton: Gary Lineker cannot believe what he saw at Goodison Park
Gary Lineker has compared Everton to struggling Burnley after they struggled to find the net despite several opportunities in the 3-1 defeat to West Ham at Goodison Park.
The former England striker insisted that being able to finish your chances is a key aspect of the game, and questioned why Sean Dyche’s team consistently struggle in that department.
Burnley currently sit 19th in the league on just 13 points, suffering similar goalscoring issues to the Toffees but without Dyche’s fantastically well-organised defensive unit to save them.
Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Lineker shared: “It was an odd game. They [West Ham] won 3-1 at Everton, but Everton… Well, it’s the story of more than just this season, isn’t it?
“Not being able to finish it off when they get the amount of chances that they do, they had loads. Like Alan said about Burnley, it’s an important ingredient of the game, finishing it off.”
Will Everton stay up in the Premier League this season?
A lack of that goalscoring touch, especially at Goodison Park, has been Everton’s main problem this season. Their defence has been outstanding and received plenty of praise, but if they can’t take their chances at the other end, it’s all for nothing.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin is without a goal in 20 games, despite some advice from Alan Shearer, while Beto’s missed penalty alongside several opportunities despite scoring against West Ham raised further concerns about his ability.
Some fans are beginning to ask questions about Dyche’s leadership and organisation, but in games like the one with West Ham where there are countless chances and a lack of conviction, the blame must fall on the players.

With a points deduction in place, and another potentially looming, the relegation battle is far from over, and if Everton don’t start picking up points, they could be in serious trouble come the end of it all.
