Everton precedent set as Chelsea sink into further PSR trouble as £90.1m update emerges

Everton may have set the precedent for potential punishments heading Chelsea’s way after the Blues slipped into further profit and sustainability trouble.

Sean Dyche’s side have already received a 10-point deduction, now reduced to six points, for breaching the Premier League’s financial fair play rules and could be set for a similar punishment after a second charge was levelled against them.

While the majority of coverage has surrounded the Toffees’ and Nottingham Forest’s potential punishments, it appears that Chelsea could also be risking a similar deduction amid new reports from Stamford Bridge.

The Telegraph reported on Thursday (7 March) that Mauricio Pochettinho’s side has fresh doubts over their ability to meet PSR rules with it being revealed that they made a £90.1million loss before tax in the year leading up to 30 June 2023.

Chelsea made a £121.4million loss in the 12 months before and this latest report could mean that they will be forced to raise money through player sales, despite insistence from Chelsea that they have remained within regulations.

For Chelsea to fall within the rule of making a £105million loss across three years, the Blues will have to sell £100million worth of players by 30 June to be safe from a potential PSR charge and a six-point deduction.

Will Chelsea also receive a point deduction like Everton?

The Premier League have set a precedent by deducting Everton six points for their first financial fair play charge and now they have to do the same to teams like Nottingham Forest and Chelsea if they are also found guilty.

Everton boss Sean Dyche
Sean Dyche’s Everton side have faced plenty of challenges both on and off the pitch this season.

A number of Toffees’ supporters have suggested that the league and its independent commission have treated Dyche’s side harshly, especially as Manchester City remain unpunished for over 100 alleged preaches.

Whether or not the Premier League will follow their own guidelines and punish Chelsea remains to be seen, but it seems likely that Pochettinho’s side could be set for a new blow at Stamford Bridge.
