Everton: Amadou Onana may be set for summer exit as Joelinton update emerges at Newcastle

Everton are surrounded by uncertainty currently at Goodison Park, with off-the-field issues in Merseyside continuing to dominate the talk around Sean Dyche’s side.

A second potential point deduction is looming over the Toffees, 777 Partners’ takeover is still waiting for approval from the Premier League and relegation remains a very real possibility in the final months of the season.

That has made it very hard for Everton to plan for next summer’s transfer window, but reports linking Toffees stars to the exit door haven’t stopped with the likes of Jarrad Branthwaite and Amadou Onana tipped for moves away.

Fabrizio Romano has suggested that there is a good chance the Belgian midfielder will leave Goodison come the end of the season amid plenty of interest from teams around Europe including Arsenal [Daily Briefing, 24 February].

Newcastle scouts were also understood to watch Onana during the January transfer window as Eddie Howe looked to add a new central midfielder to his ranks, but they were only willing to pay a loan fee [The Athletic, 2 February].

However, a new update involving Brazilian midfielder Joelinton may open a space in the Magpies’ budget to secure Onana’s signature this summer.

Will Everton sell Amadou Onana during the summer transfer window?

Howe has suggested that Newcastle are still yet to agree a new deal with Joelinton to extend his stay at St James’ Park, with his current contract set to expire at the end of next season.

As quoted by Romano on X (8 March) he said: “We are still trying from the club side to reach an agreement with Joelinton over a new deal, we are desperate to keep him.

“There’s been no major changes to the situation but we are trying, we are on it”.

While Howe insists Newcastle are keen to tie the Brazilian down, he has conceded that there is no “major” movement in either direction. If Joelinton leaves in the summer it could see the Magpies push for a move for Onana.

Everton supporters will be hoping to see Newcastle’s star man sign on the dotted line sooner rather than later to try and boost their chances of keeping the Belgian at Goodison Park beyond the end of the season.
