Everton: Idrissa Gueye fails late fitness test v Manchester United

Idrissa Gueye has failed a late fitness test and will miss the big game between Everton and Manchester United on Saturday, according to Ben Dinnery.

Writing on his personal Twitter account (9 March), the injury expert reports that the Senegal international has failed to recover from a calf problem.

The midfielder was not named in the matchday squad by Sean Dyche as the boss named an unnamed starting lineup for the clash at Old Trafford.

“The Toffees are also unchanged with Beto keeping his place ahead of Calvert-Lewin,” he wrote.

“Gueye fails a late test.”

Big blow for Everton and Gueye

Everton have had some bad injury blows this season at different times, and the midfield area has often been effected most.

Amadou Onana and Abdoulaye Doucoure have both missed chunks of the campaign with different injuries while Dele Alli is yet to feature and Andre Gomes has struggled for fitness too.

But Gueye has been a regular for Dyche in the centre of midfield and his combative and defensive style suits the way the manager wants to play, especially in these big away games.

However in his absence the likes of James Garner have really stepped up to become key players for the Toffees and that should make the fact Gueye is unavailable a little more bearable.

In a game where Everton won’t be expecting to have too much of the ball and will need to rely on being strong defensively, this is a blow undoubtedly.
