Everton: Gary Lineker and Ian Wright share ‘familiar’ Sean Dyche verdict after loss v Manchester United
Everton manager Sean Dyche is struggling to solve the Toffees’ “profligate” streak in front of goal following the Blues’ defeat to Manchester United, according to Gary Lineker and Ian Wright.
Dyche’s side continued their winless run in the Premier League in 2024 with a 2-0 defeat to the Red Devils on Saturday (9 March) as both Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford slotted home first-half penalties.
Despite the scoreline, the Toffees had plenty of opportunities to make their way back into the game but were unable to make them count in a fashion that has become “all too familiar” for Lineker.
Speaking on Match Of The Day (9 March, 29:50) he said: “It’s kind of an all too familiar tale for Everton, isn’t it? So profligate in front of goal.”
Wright was quick to agree, saying: “Like the manager said, they’re doing everything right but it’s the composure and some of the decisions they’re making at the death there because they started the game so well.
“They’re very unlucky today but Man United were just very clinical with their penalties. I thought they were very fortunate because Everton’s game plan was very good.”
Will Sean Dyche be sacked by Everton as pressure mounts after Manchester United defeat?
As both Lineker and Wright suggested, these sorts of wasteful performances and disappointing defeats have become far too common for Everton in recent weeks under Dyche’s management as the Toffees never look like scoring.
In possession, the Blues look excellent until they enter the final third when all their confidence seems to vanish as they look to find the back of the net. If this continues, it’s hard to see them dodging the drop into the Championship.

While Dominic Calvert-Lewin has come in for a lot of criticism from pundits and supporters alike for his poor finishing, he isn’t the only player failing to take his chances as several Everton stars spurned great opportunities on Saturday.
Hopefully, Dyche will manage to get his frontline firing between now and the end of the season. If things don’t change quickly at Goodison Park, the pressure could continue to mount on the Englishman and he may well face the sack.
