Everton in ‘big trouble’ after ‘comic book stuff’ v Manchester United – BBC Sport journalist

Everton are in “big trouble” after their 2-0 Premier League defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford.

That is according to BBC Sport journalist Simon Stone, with the Toffees coming out second best on Saturday (9 March).

Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford both scored penalties, with the defeat leaving the Goodison Park club sitting 16th in the table.

“At one point substitute Dominic Calvert-Lewin rose to meet a header on the edge of the six-yard box, only to send it straight back across goal,” Stone wrote for BBC Sport (9 March).

“Lewis Dobbin reacted and also tried to score, only to send the ball back across where it had come from, with Andre Onana not called upon on either occasion.

“It was comic book stuff but it is no laughing matter for Everton, who are in big trouble on the pitch, let alone off it.”

Everton leave Old Trafford with nothing in 2-0 loss

Manchester United have not been perfect under Erik ten Hag this season, and this match was certainly a chance for the Toffees to clinch at least a point.

But it was a professional performance from the hosts to get the job done against Sean Dyche’s side, who failed to take advantage of their many chances on the road.

The travelling manager will be extremely annoyed at the lack of composure from his attackers, and indeed at defensive duo James Tarkowski and Ben Godfrey as they gave away penalties for fouls on Alejandro Garnacho.

James Tarkowski started all 38 of Everton’s Premier League matches this season.

Unfortunately, the Merseyside outfit now have to wait until the end of the month to bounce back from yet another loss, with the Toffees travelling to Bournemouth next on 30 March.

It does, however, give Dyche plenty of time to work with his players on the training ground as the manager looks to raise the standards among the squad.
