Everton: Kieran Maguire analyses risk of third FFP sanction as new Premier League rules emerge

Everton are not expected to face more trouble at the hands of the proposed new Premier League spending rules, according to Kieran Maguire.

The football finance expert from the University of Liverpool posted a model on Twitter (12 March) using the most recent available figures, to analyse which clubs would likely be at risk of breaching new regulations tipped to be introduced in the summer.

The Toffees have already been referred twice under the current rules – a £105million limit for allowable losses over a rolling three-year period – but a cap on spending being tied to a percentage of revenue is projected to not be an issue at Goodison Park as things stand.

Maguire wrote: “Looking at the new [Premier League] proposed rules in relation to squad spending caps and applying to 22/23. Assumptions are Player wages are 70% of total, cap is 70% of revenue for clubs in [UEFA competition] & 85% if not. Transfer spend calculated as average net spend for last three years.

“Table shows aspirational clubs with owners wanting to spend (Newcastle, [Aston] Villa etc) would struggle, existing clubs in UEFA would be fine, despite lower % spend allowed, Everton would be within the limit.”

Everton set to avoid further punishment under proposed Premier League rule change

It comes as a welcome relief for financial regulations to not be set to cause yet more headaches at Everton for once, after how the past few seasons have gone.

In light of the relative austerity the club have been operating under in the transfer market, with a positive net spend as the likes of Richarlison, Anthony Gordon, Alex Iwobi and Demarai Gray have all left, there surely should be some sort of control over things by now.

Clearly it is not all plain sailing at Goodison since 777 Partners are currently having to provide regular loans to keep the club operating, around £190million so far, but it is at least a bonus that the proposed changes aren’t lining up to drop a potential third sanction.

Everton have already been hit by one points deduction, reduced from 10 to six on appeal, and are at risk of a second this season.

That the current rules have caused the Toffees such a nightmare only to be scrapped, with the ongoing cases set to be uneffected by the overhaul, looks like the latest slap in the face to the supporters.

But at the very least the club appears to be in position to be compliant if the change is made this summer.

In other Everton news, a Premier League club want the Toffees to give them a huge £25m transfer discount.
