Everton set for FFP ‘advantage’ if Premier League rules scrapped after transfer boost – lawyer
Everton will have an “advantage” under the proposed new spending rules in the Premier League, according to Stefan Borson.
The lawyer and former financial adviser to Manchester City took to Twitter on 12 March, after news emerged the previous day that the current regulations may be scrapped in the summer for a system similar to UEFA’s, to predict that “initially” the clubs who have made major player sales in the past three seasons would benefit.
The Toffees have sold the likes of Richarlison to Tottenham for £60million [Sky Sports], Anthony Gordon to Newcastle for £45m [Sky Sports], and Alex Iwobi to Fulham for £22m [The Athletic, 1 October] in that time so are tipped to be well-placed if the overhaul comes in at the end of the current campaign.
Borson wrote: “Fair bit of misunderstanding of the likely new PL PSR rules/UEFA Squad Control. Initially, teams with big profits on player sales in one of (or average over) the last 3 years will have an advantage – Chelsea, City, Everton, Brighton, Burnley, Wolves. Bad for Newcastle, Arsenal, [Manchester] Utd.”
Major transfer exits to hand Everton FFP advantage under new spending rules
Although the wild transfer spending for little return under Farhad Moshiri is a large part of what has caused the recent issues at Goodison Park that picture has changed hugely in the past couple of seasons.
The CIES Football Observatory illustrated as much on 5 September when their figures showed the Toffees had a greater net loss in the market since 2014 (-£391m) than Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, albeit so did the likes of Bournemouth and Crystal Palace.
But of the 20 clubs with the highest loss since 2014 Everton were the only side to post a profit in their 2023 figures (£73m).
The proof will be in practice once the switch from the current rules, which have clearly not been kind to the club, to the expected new set.
The Toffees thought they were okay under the present system only to be burned twice, but there is at least a positive indication that there might at least be some up side to the depressing difficulties fans have had to endure in recent transfer windows.
