Everton: Rarely seen gem joins first team for Portugal training camp
Everton academy star Lewis Warrington has joined up with Sean Dyche’s senior squad out in Portugal, according to Matt Smith.
The GiveMeSport journalist reported [15 March] that the 21-year-old midfielder was not named in the Toffees’ Under 21s match against Wolves on Friday, having joined up with the first team’s training camp.
Warrington joined Plymouth Argyle on loan last summer, but due to injury, he only made four appearances for the Championship outfit before his loan deal was cut short.
Could Lewis Warrington be closing in on a first-team promotion at Everton?
The 19-year-old, who may not be known to many fans at Goodison Park, returned from his loan-ending injury last month and has made three appearances in the Premier League 2, twice captaining the side.
Although Warrington only has one Everton senior appearance to his name, coming on as a substitute in an EFL Cup tie against Fleetwood Town in August 2022, the midfielder has accumulated plenty of experience out on loan.
Dyche has clearly seen something bright in the youngster, calling him up to the first team training camp as the Toffees prepare for an all-important Premier League clash with Bournemouth on Saturday 30 March once they return.
With 17 appearances for Tranmere Rovers and 44 appearances for Fleetwood, the midfielder has earned his plaudits and looks to have earned the respect of the first-team manager.
Due to Liverpool’s FA Cup tie with Manchester United on Sunday 17 March, Everton are without a fixture up until a visit to the Vitality Stadium, which could leave plenty of time for Warrington to impress the manager.
The Toffees’ midfield has been one of the biggest worries for Dyche this season, with Idrissa Gana Gueye, Amadou Onana and Abdoulaye Doucoure all experiencing their respective injuries.
With Jarrad Branthwaite and Lewis Dobbin both proving that there is a direct route to the first team, Warrington will be hoping he can follow a similar trend.
In other Everton news, there is pressure mounting as the Toffees’ financial future is in doubt amid a fresh takeover twist.
