Martin Keown shares new Burnley relegation verdict live on BBC, makes Everton admission

Martin Keown believes Burnley could still have a chance of staying up this season depending on whether or not Everton and Nottingham Forest receive points deductions.

Speaking on the BBC’s Final Score on Saturday (16 March), the pundit pointed out how Chris Sutton had suggested earlier in the day that the Clarets had “no chance” of avoiding relegation in this campaign.

Although he concedes that is probably still the case, he believes they could still be in the mix after their 2-1 victory over Brentford and that we’ll have to see what happens with the Toffees and Forest’s spending breach charges.

“Chris (Sutton) was saying at the start of today that they had no chance of staying up,” said Keown. “He’s probably right, but let’s see what happens with the deductions from the teams above them, they’ve got a chance.”

Burnley face uphill despite Everton issues

The victory for Burnley over Brentford has given them an ever-so-slight chance of staying up this season, but it will depend on what happens with Everton and Forest.

The Clarets have had a difficult campaign on their return to the Premier League as they currently find themselves eight points from safety and as much as five points behind third-bottom Luton Town.

If their two relegation rivals were to receive points deductions, then it would bring Vincent Kompany’s side back into the mix, but there are question marks over whether they could keep the pace even if that were to happen.

There will no doubt be concern at Goodison Park over their recent run of form, having gone 11 games without a top-flight win, but they do have the quality to get themselves out of trouble.

It would be a huge blow if they were to receive another points deduction this season, as it would be difficult to keep a positive attitude amongst the players after so much has already gone against them.
