Paul Merson makes ‘Crazy’ Everton relegation prediction live on Sky Sports

Paul Merson has made a “crazy” relegation prediction involving Everton while live on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday by backing Luton to stay up.

The Toffees currently sit four points above the relegation zone following a six-point deduction but don’t play again until the end of the month, giving Luton a chance to close the gap when they face Nottingham Forest on Saturday afternoon (16 March).

But while appearing on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday (16 March, 12:26), Merson admitted that he is worried about Sean Dyche’s side after their 11-game winless run while backing the Hatters to avoid the drop.

“It’s all about timing, it’s when you play someone,” he said. “You’ll remember, not long ago, Bournemouth were struggling like crazy. Then they go and play Newcastle at home with 11 players out. They beat Newcastle and they started their run up the table.

“At the moment I think Luton get out of it. I like their fixtures. I think they’re a different beast at home and I think they win today and they’re right, right, right in this.

“My worry would be Everton because they keep on going under the radar and they keep on losing football matches. And the worrying thing is sometimes they keep on playing well and they’re losing football matches.

“That’s even more of a worry. For me, I think Luton still get out of it.”

Everton to be relegated from the Premier League?

There’s no doubt that Everton are in a fight against relegation in the final ten games of this season, and that isn’t what the team’s performances have deserved.

No team in the top flight has underperformed their xG more than the Toffees, and it’s obviously impossible to ignore the fact they should have six points more than they do.

But while Merson is usually someone who tends to side with Dyche and Everton when it comes to survival, he is right to be worried and any fans who say they aren’t are simply lying.

With no wins in 11 games the team have tumbled down the table and all the belief in the squad and stands has been sucked out of the club alongside all the off-pitch issues.

But the international break may have come at the perfect time for the squad and this poor run simply has to end at some point. If they can pick up a few wins they should be fine, but there are no guarantees at this level.
