Everton: Journalist slams ‘total mess’ after Nottingham Forest verdict delivered
Alan Nixon has slammed the “total mess” involving Everton after Nottingham Forest’s four-point deduction for a breach of Profit and Sustainability rules was reported on Monday (18 March).
The Toffees had a 10-point deduction reduced to six after an appeal against their own punishment for flouting the Premier League’s financial rules was partially upheld.
It was reported by the Guardian (18 March) that Forest have now learned their fate, while Everton could still lose more points as they await a hearing for a second PSR breach.
Following the news coming out on Monday, journalist Nixon took to X to offer his view (18 March), writing: “There’s the Forest case to finalise. Maybe Everton too. What a total mess. It’s been like this in the EFL for years too.
“[It’s a] rarity that nobody has been hit with points in the Championship.”
How can Everton benefit from the huge blow for Nottingham Forest?
A lot of the Goodison Park faithful were angered and confused when the initial 10-point deduction hit the club and even the return of some of those points has done little to subside the anger, with Everton 16th in the Premier League.
Of course, there is still plenty of confusion about the rules, with Everton and Forest being handed different punishments for very similar breaches, which will hopefully be explained in the coming days.
Although Sean Dyche’s side are still yet to claim a league victory since December, currently on an 11-game winless streak, Blues fans might sleep a little easier following the news of Forest’s punishment.
Unless there is a huge change in form from Sheffield United and Burnley, these two are set to fall straight back down to the Championship, which leaves one spot free for Crystal Palace, Brentford, Everton, Forest and Luton.
There is still a lot to play for, with just 10 matches of the season remaining, but the Toffees can take great confidence from their relegation rivals being handed a similar fate to themselves.
