Everton stance shared after Nottingham Forest news with second PSR punishment imminent

Everton do not intend to get embroiled in a “public spat” with Nottingham Forest after the latter’s PSR punishment was confirmed, according to The Athletic.

Forest were docked four points on Monday (18 March), which is six fewer than Everton earlier this season, albeit four of those have since been rescinded.

That is despite the Reds having recorded a substantially higher loss than Everton in their accounts, leading to confusion among the Goodison Park fanbase.

In an article for The Athletic [18 March], Philip Buckingham shared Everton’s stance following the news that emerged this week.

“Everton are saying nothing,” Buckingham said. “They still have that other PSR charge to answer in the coming weeks, bringing the threat of a second points deduction, and there is little enthusiasm from within Goodison Park to begin a public spat in the wake of Forest receiving lesser sanctions.

“Privately, though, there will be inevitable frustration. Two breaches, one bigger than the other. And two punishments, one smaller than the other.

“The two have not gone together as expected and, still without a framework in place for breaches of PSR, the perceived inconsistencies will cause deep irritation for Everton.”

Everton set to be hit with second PSR points penalty

Everton fans have every right to raise an eyebrow at Forest’s charge. Even more so when you consider the original 10-point deduction.

The Premier League also put on record recently that a six-point deduction would be the minimum if a team breached financial rules.

It is a further example of those in charge having no real clue what they are doing, and seemingly just plucking a number out of the air.

Everton have a second punishment incoming, which many are expecting to be a points deduction in the region of four points – so 10 in total.

It goes without saying that would leave the Toffees’ long-running status as a top-flight club in serious jeopardy.

Forest are almost certain to appeal, as will the Toffees, which means the final Premier League table will not be set in stone until late May.

Even if Forest and Everton were guilty of breaching rules, this fallout is ultimately a mess of the Premier League’s own doing.
