Everton: Phil McNulty makes England prediction for ‘absolutely outstanding’ Jarrad Branthwaite

Phil McNulty believes Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite could start for England when they face Belgium on Tuesday (26 March).

Writing in his Q&A on the BBC Sport website on Monday (25 March), the journalist said the 21-year-old had to be named in the starting lineup for one of the games in this international break, leaving the clash against the Red Devils as his only remaining opportunity after warming the bench in the 1-0 defeat to Brazil.

He added that the centre-back has been “absolutely outstanding” for the Toffees this season and doesn’t look the type to be concerned about making the step up to the Three Lions senior squad, but he expects Harry Maguire to start alongside John Stones at the European Championships.

“I agree Branthwaite had to start at least one of these games, which just leaves tomorrow obviously,” said McNulty. “He has been absolutely outstanding this season and does not look the type to be concerned by the step up to full England level.

“I think there are candidates such as Branthwaite, Joe Gomez, Levi Colwill and others but my point was that no one has made a strong enough case to make Gareth Southgate alter his view that Harry Maguire is his best option alongside John Stones.

“Like you, I’d love to see Branthwaite start against Belgium then it is up to him but as I have said, and despite my reservations, I still think Maguire will start in Germany.”

Jarrad Branthwaite has to start for England amid Everton form

It would be extremely disappointing if Branthwaite isn’t handed a start for England against Belgium after he was left on the bench against Brazil.

There are many who believe the centre-back could be the answer to the Three Lions’ defensive problems, given that he is left-footed and has been in fine form this season.

It would be a surprise if Gareth Southgate didn’t name him in the starting lineup at Wembley because surely he wants to take a proper look at him and weigh up whether or not he’s worth a spot for the European Championships.

Everton Jarrad Branthwaite
Everton are willing to sell other players before letting go of Jarrad Branthwaite.

While he might not be able to become a permanent fixture in the Three Lions side just yet, having that exposure around the team will only do him good as he continues his development.

If he can make it onto the plane for the tournament in Germany, then that would surely add a few more million to his growing transfer value as there looks set to be increased interest in him this summer.
