Everton: Lawyer reacts to Andros Townsend comments as Toffees fight second PSR charge
Matt Stanbury has responded to comments made by Luton Town winger Andros Townsend regarding Everton and Nottingham Forest.
Townsend claimed on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Football Club [25 March] that the situation at the bottom of the Premier League is “nonsense”.
That is due to Forest appealing their four-point deduction and Everton bracing themselves for a second deduction, which they can also appeal.
Responding to Townsend’s quotes on his personal X account [26 March], public lawyer Stanbury flagged a comment he made the day before.
“This feels like Gamesmanship as much as sour grapes,” Stanbury said of Forest’s decision to lodge an appeal.
“Letting Luton know it might yet all change. Not a chance that the Appeal Board, having given EFC 6 points, is overturning the decision.”
Nottingham Forest launch Premier League points deduction appeal
As Stanbury says, it seems extremely unlikely that Forest will be successful in any way with their appeal.
Some have suggested it is a free hit of sorts for the Reds as the deduction cannot be increased, but others have suggested that is not the case.
The most likely outcome, you would assume, is that the four-point deduction stays as it is.
If nothing else, that causes confusion at the bottom, as Townsend has implied. Luton may consider a point against a certain opponent a good result, whereas if they were in the bottom three it would be two points dropped.
The situation will be exactly the same when Everton learn of their second PSR charge verdict. If more points are deducted, an appeal will be lodged and nobody will know how many points they actually have.
It makes for the most farcical Premier League campaign in history – one that ultimately will unlikely be decided until a week after the campaign actually concludes.
