Sean Dyche regularly calls security guard to find out about Everton loanee Harry Tyrer

Everton goalkeeper Harry Tyrer – on loan at Chesterfield – has told the Liverpool Echo how Toffees boss Sean Dyche regularly calls a security guard nicknamed ‘Tank’ to ask about his progress.

Tyrer, 22, is a boyhood Everton fan and recently secured promotion from the National League with his temporary employers, who are 21 points clear at the top of the table.

The young shot-stopper is encouraged by Dyche’s interest in his performances as he looks to earn a chance in the Toffees’ first-team, saying: “Sean Dyche keeps an eye on our results and he’s mates with one of the security guards here who works the tunnel who we call ‘Tank’.

“He’s always saying to me: ‘Dychey has been on the phone, asking about you’, and stuff like that so it’s good to hear, coming from the gaffer back at Everton.”

Tyrer has been a virtual ever-present in Chesterfield’s promotion charge, playing all but two of the club’s National League fixtures this term – no other player has racked up more minutes than his 3,510 (level with central defender Jamie Grimes).

The fifth-tier outfit’s record with him in the side is 28 wins, five draws and six defeats – working out to a superb win rate of 71.8 per cent.

However, if Tyrer is to fulfil his dream of breaking into the Everton first team and emulating current custodian Jordan Pickford, he may have to ensure his next loan is at a significantly higher level.

At 22, he is still young for a goalkeeper, but at the same age, Pickford had just broken into Sunderland’s starting line-up and was their first choice between the sticks for the 2016/17 Premier League campaign.

Tyrer must capitalise on the positive momentum he has generated at Chesterfield and produce equally impressive showings in 2024/25, wherever that may be – and perhaps that will be enough to earn him a chance back at Everton.
