Everton: Martin Keown rages at Jordan Pickford ‘disaster’ after what MOTD footage showed him do

Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford has left Martin Keown in a rage after Match of the Day footage showed his “disaster” against Bournemouth.

Sean Dyche’s side’s winless run in the Premier League in 2024 continued on Saturday (30 March) as the Cherries picked up an important 2-1 win on the south coast, courtesy of a late own goal from Seamus Coleman.

While the Northern Irishman came under some scrutiny for his role in the late winner, Keown was quick to slam Toffees’ stopper Pickford for his role in the strike after he failed to stop the cross into the penalty area.

Speaking on Match of the Day (30 March, 1:20:00) he said: “Look at the goalkeeper Pickford. He’s got his hands on his hips. He should be on red alert. I think it just creates an indecision, he starts to come for it and then it just hits Coleman.

“The goalkeeper comes on to it, Branthwaite goes towards it as well. They all converge on the ball and nobody is taking responsibility and it’s in the back of the net. Disaster.”

Will Jordan Pickford stay at Everton in the summer transfer window?

While a number of Everton players can be criticised for their performances so far this season, Pickford has tended to be almost untouchable as the England international has been widely praised for his exploits.

But Saturday’s defeat showed perhaps the biggest weakness that has plagued his domestic career so far as he demonstrated a level of chaos and indecision that saw the Toffees throw away what could have been a vital point.

It had seemed as though he had begun to cut those errors out of his game, but after a shaky international break he was nowhere near his best against the Cherries and that will worry Dyche as Everton prepare for a relegation fight.

Hopefully, the Toffees will find a way to get back to winning ways and avoid the drop this term. If they do end up in the Championship, you have to wonder if Pickford will be particularly keen on playing in England’s second tier.
