Everton: 2nd points deduction ‘inevitable’ says Kieran Maguire as mitigation lost in accounts
Everton are almost certainly now set for another points deduction after the release of their latest accounts, believes Kieran Maguire.
The football finance expert from the University of Liverpool told i News (2 April) it is now “pretty inevitable” that a second points sanction will be the result from the recently concluded independent commission hearing.
While the £89.1million loss revealed in the 2022/23 accounts is not the number that will be added to the previous two years for the £105m profit and sustainability calculation, since acceptable spending will be be taken off, the i News report indicates it puts the club in line for another significant breach, with an amount similar to the £19.5m they were previously deducted points for expected.
Additionally, the fact that the total loss is almost double the amount from the previous year’s accounts it will also mean Everton “lose any potential mitigation for a positive trend in their PSR figures” suggesting this would have been viewed dimly by the panel.
Sean Dyche set for steeper Everton mountain to climb?
Few clubs seem to have ability to drain hope from their fanbase with the same regularity as the Toffees do in recent years and so they have proven once more.
Supporters, much like Sean Dyche, would no doubt have hoped that after the first breach the club would have been moving in the right direction in future periods, especially since the team is proof that net spending there has certainly not been plentiful.
There have been some suggestions that a points deduction could be avoided this time, but that seems. to depend on how charitably the hearing panel view various factors the second time round.
It seems highly unlikely that they are now going to take it especially lightly that Everton breached for one period, for which they have already lost six points reduced from 10 on appeal, and then managed to lose far more money the following year, whatever the arguments about why that is.
So if the mitigation of taking positive steps has clearly disappeared then the chances of being treated lightly seems more remote.

The double jeopardy argument still seems to hold a fair amount of water, with Maguire himself previously suggesting a two-thirds reduction had a decent chance on the grounds that two of the three years in question (the ones prior to the one detailed in the new accounts) have already been sanctioned.
So even if fully avoiding a new points penalty might be wishful thinking in light of the latest developments perhaps the size of the punishment could still be brought down significantly.
But in light of another concerning set of numbers which don’t really indicate the situation is being brought under control despite the purgatory of a stretched squad struggling on without enough quality players, and another particularly heartbreaking defeat at Bournemouth over Easter, fans could be excused for expecting the worst rather than hoping for the best.
