Everton: Ally McCoist shares ‘concerned’ relegation verdict ahead of ‘massive’ Newcastle clash
Everton supporters “should be concerned” about the possibility of relegation this season with the uncertainty around Goodison Park, according to Ally McCoist.
The Toffees sit 16th in the Premier League, three points clear of the relegation zone ahead of their showdown with Newcastle United on Tuesday (2 April) but could be hit with a second point deduction in the coming days.
While McCoist believes the trip to St James’ Park will be “absolutely massive” in the relegation battle, he admits that any of the Toffees, Brentford, Luton Town or Nottingham Forest could still go down this season.
Speaking on talkSPORT on Tuesday (2 April, 9:08) he said: “It’s absolutely massive. Luton again at the weekend everybody is saying they were unlucky and what a job Rob Edwards is doing but the unfortunate thing for Luton is they need to start picking up points.
“They’re losing late equalisers, late goals for the opposition to win games. I’ve really enjoyed them, but they need to start picking up points.
“Everton, the uncertainty as well, they’ve already lost points. Forest, the question mark over them. Are Brentford out of it? You’d look at that performance on the weekend and you’d have to say yes but their recent record hasn’t been good.
“I think all of those fans should be concerned, no doubt about it.”
Will Everton be relegated from the Premier League this season?
While the race at the top of the Premier League has attracted most of the media attention so far this season, the battle to avoid the drop at the bottom of the table couldn’t be much closer in the final stages of the campaign.
As McCoist suggested, there is plenty of uncertainty around Goodison Park which could drag Everton straight back into the dogfight in the coming weeks, especially if they are hit with a second point deduction.

But on the field, Sean Dyche’s side have done very little to suggest that they are capable of putting a run of form together to climb away from the dropzone. They’re yet to win in the league in 2024 and that doesn’t look like changing anytime soon.
Hopefully, the Toffees can take a step towards safety against Newcastle United on Tuesday. It will take a much-improved performance from the Blues but a win at St James’ Park would change the entire battle in its entirety.
