Everton: Sean Dyche reacts to incident v Newcastle after what Laura Woods said
Sean Dyche was confused at the delay in the VAR decision to award Everton a late penalty against Newcastle after Laura Woods quizzed him on TNT Sports.
The Toffees boss was pitch-side with Woods, Shay Given and Joleon Lescott after Dominic Calvert-Lewin converted the spot-kick in question to secure a 1-1 draw at St. James’ Park.
Ashley Young was adjudged to have been fouled by Paul Dummett after a long VAR check confirmed the blatantly obvious in the dying minutes.
Speaking live on TNT Sports, as posted on X, Dyche bemoaned the time taken by VAR to award it after Woods spoke over the footage: “I don’t know why they have to look at it 300 times. It’s crazy they don’t just give it.”
Shay Given reacted to the incident while the manager watched on, saying it looked more like a rugby tackle: “I thought Dummett was playing for the Newcastle Falcons. It’s a stone-wall penalty, but VAR got the decision right in the end.”
Everton draw inspiration from late penalty as winless run continues
As the Toffees broke a club record for 13 consecutive Premier League games without victory in their 1-1 draw at St. James’ Park, Dyche was still happy that his side rallied late to secure a valuable point in the fight for Premier League survival.

Going 1-0 down inside the opening quarter of an hour and seeing further Newcastle strikes ruled out and cleared off the line, Dyche was likely fearing a 15th league defeat of the season as VAR took an age to award Everton a penalty for Dummett’s foul on Young.
Given it was though, as Calvert-Lewin stepped up to drill home his first Premier League goal since October.
Dyche will certainly be hoping that goal can restore the striker’s confidence and form, with the fight for Premier League survival set to go right down to the wire.
