Kieran Maguire: Everton have been ‘disingenuous’ after latest Goodison financial development

Kieran Maguire believes Everton have been a bit “disingenuous” after their latest accounts have been revealed.

Speaking on The Price of Football podcast on Thursday (4 April), the football finance expert said one of the arguments that the Toffees put forward in their first points deduction hearing was that the trend of their losses was on the way down.

But after the Blues posted a loss of £89.1million for 2022/23, he added that it has proven not to be the case and that some of the club’s fans feel a bit “disappointed” by how the situation has panned out at Goodison Park.

“I think the politest thing you can say is that the club have been a bit disingenuous,” said Maguire. “If you read the first commission report from cover to cover, one of the arguments put forward by Everton is that if you take a look at the trend of the losses, the club was taking steps to address its financial profligacy historically and that the trend was that the losses were decreasing.

“Now, clearly, they knew that by the time that first commission took place, that was not the case as far as 2023 was concerned. I think there are fans that feel a bit disappointed.”

Everton have questions to answer amid latest financial update

There is no wonder that some Everton fans are disappointed by the latest financial development as it could land the club in further trouble.

It has been revealed that those figures are what have been used by the second commission in dealing with their ongoing charge, meaning another points deduction could be on the cards.

The Toffees have claimed that they are trying to bring their losses down, but there is no evidence that they have been successful in those efforts.

While it’s not even worth thinking about, you have to ask how they are going to bring themselves in line for the next three-year period, posing the question of whether further charges could be on the way.

It’s a really frustrating situation for the Blues fans as this issue continues to drag on following years of mismanagement on Merseyside.
