Ally McCoist and Alan Brazil share Everton relegation verdict amid ‘Incredible’ development
Ally McCoist and Alan Brazil believe the relegation battle could go down to the final two games of the season after Everton drew with Newcastle.
Speaking on talkSPORT for talkSPORT Bet (5 April), the duo were discussing the “incredible” midweek fixtures at the bottom half of the table with McCoist lamenting a “moment of madness” that helped the Toffees earn a late point at St James’ Park.
But both pundits praised the spirit of Sean Dyche’s side and admitted that they feel the situation with potential points deductions looming over clubs is an “unfair” situation for everyone in and around the bottom.
“We’ve seen some incredible games at the bottom,” Brazil said. “Everton got a good point [vs Newcastle].”
“Great point,” McCoist said. “We can talk about the penalty decision, moment of madness. Madness. And to be fair Newcastle should have been home and dry in that particular game.
“But the one thing Everton have got, the same Luton have got, the same Forest have got, they’ve got spirit.
“I think it’s tight, I really think it’s tight. And of course we still don’t know what’s going to happen with the points, which is unfair not just on Forest and Everton but it’s also unfair on Luton and teams like that round about them. It’s just unfair.
Brazil then admitted he didn’t want to see Forest get relegated and believes it will go down to the last two games of the season.
Everton need points on the board not spirit
As much as it’s great to see the team morale high after the late draw in midweek, it’s now 13 games without a win for the Toffees in the Premier League.
The team haven’t won a game in the league in 2024, with their last win coming on December 16 against Burnley and with their next fixture being the reverse game it’s a great chance for them to open up a gap over other teams in the relegation zone.
But the spirit of the team isn’t going to be enough and the fans making the stadium shake with their support isn’t going to be enough. The players need to start performing.
The manager needs to find a way to get the players back to the level they were at earlier in the season when they went on a run of seven wins in nine games in all competitions.
A similar run would see them avoid the drop for sure, even with another points deduction. That form has to start as soon as possible.
