Everton: Dominic Calvert-Lewin must improve despite what he did in win v Burnley

Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored the only goal as Everton claimed a 1-0 victory over Burnley at Goodison Park on Saturday (6 April).

The 27-year-old capitalised on a horrendous mistake by the Clarets’ shot-stopper Arijanet Muric, blocking an attempted clearance which eventually looped and bounced into the net to give the Toffees the lead.

Of course, Sean Dyche will only be worrying about the all-important three points claimed amid a tight relegation battle at the bottom of the Premier League, with Brentford and Luton Town also earning points.

Even so, Calvert-Lewin’s display left much to be desired, despite netting for the second game in a row following his penalty against Newcastle United on Tuesday 2 April.

The striker has been out of form for the majority of the current campaign and Beto has been no better, adding just three Premier League goals to his record so far.

Utilising his height, Calvert-Lewin won the most duels out of anyone on the pitch (12), though he won just 45 per cent of his aerial battles during 84 minutes on the pitch. [FotMob]

This was unusual for the Everton striker, who ranks in the top 98 percentile for aerials won among strikers in the top five European leagues. [FBref]

Having been fouled five times, the forward was clearly happy to put his body on the line for the Toffees, also winning 70 per cent of his ground duels against the Clarets. [FotMob]

Despite this, there is still plenty of room for improvement in Calvert-Lewin’s game, which will be important during the end-of-season run-in to avoid relegation.

He only managed to maintain a 36 per cent passing accuracy, with seven of his 11 passes going wrong, while also being caught offside on three occasions and winning zero per cent of his tackles.

He will have been disappointed not to be involved more, but at this stage of the campaign, it is about winning no matter how you play.

Calvert-Lewin still has the potential to be Dyche’s most important player this season, especially if he can hit the back of the net more before the campaign ends.
