Everton supporters involved in ‘incredible’ moment vs Burnley at Goodison Park

Joe Thomas has shared an “incredible” moment from Everton supporters that helped inspire the victory over Burnley on Saturday (6 April).

The Liverpool Echo journalist discussed some of the unseen moments from the contest at Goodison Park for the publication’s online edition [7 April].

Everton fans were fully behind their side, knowing just how big a game it was, and it paid off as the Toffees battled to a 1-0 victory on home soil.

Thomas wrote: “That opening half had lacked intensity despite the importance of the game and, when Burnley had a spell of attacking momentum before the break, it was clear the home stands were starting to grow anxious.

“This came after an incredible effort by supporter group the 1878s to create an imposing atmosphere to back their players and provide inspiration in much the same way they have at key points over recent seasons.

“Fans have seen too much of Everton this season not to fear the worst and, as their side struggled to build on their lead in the second half there was a moment when the Gwladys Street took matters into their own hands.

“Supporters behind Jordan Pickford’s goal had little to rouse them on the pitch but sparked into life with a rendition of Spirit of the Blues that gathered momentum around the rest of the stadium.

“It was a jolt that awakened Goodison and just minutes later Dara O’Shea’s mistake and panicked recovery lunge led to the red card that made Everton’s task that bit easier.”

Everton fans step up in Burnley win

Just like in the immediate aftermath of the first points deduction earlier in the campaign, Everton fans have stepped up to get fully behind the side.

That is not to say they have not been fully behind them over the past few months, but there was definitely more of an edge to the passion on show against Burnley.

That really was a massive game for the Toffees, and it means the weight of pressure that comes with a club-record winless run in the Premier League has now been lifted.

This will not be a one-off, with plans in place to do something similar for the upcoming clash against Nottingham Forest – another game that Everton cannot afford to lose.

It goes to show the power of supporters as they helped to get the Toffees over the line against Burnley.

There are not going to be many more big games at Goodison, so enjoy every last one of them as they come.
