Everton: Kieran Maguire issues 3rd-consecutive points deduction verdict live on Sky Sports

Everton do face the risk of a third points deduction next season based on the financial losses that have already been made public, according to Kieran Maguire.

The University of Liverpool football finance expert reacted live on Sky Sports News (8 April) after the Toffees received a second sanction of two points on top of their initial six, citing the previous two sets of accounts showing losses of around £134million, prior to the deduction of allowable spending, before the figures from the current year are also added.

He therefore believes that without player sales before the end of June to help balance the books for the 2023/24 financial year the threat of more points sanctions still lurk ahead.

Asked by Vicky Gomersall about further risk next season Maguire said: “You’re absolutely right Vicky, because once those accounts are announced we know that Everton lost £45m in 2022, £89m in 2023, so that gives us a total way above the £105m allowable limit.

“If they’ve lost further monies in 2024, and having made adjustments for what’s happened in Ukraine, having made adjustments for the allowables, it would seem that there is a possible adjustment unless they sell players before 30 June.

“And there’s a further issue I think in terms of the appeal that the appeal [of the latest sanction] could now take place and that judgment might come out after the end of the season, which would take away one of the great days of the season, which is the final day, when at least you know whether it’s tears or joy.”

Everton facing yet another Premier League points sanction

The current profit and sustainability rules coupled with the financial situation that has been allowed to build up at Goodison Park really is the unwanted gift that keeps on giving.

At this stage the only silver lining from the threat of a third points penalty is the fact that it won’t compound the previous two in the same season and further hamper the fight for survival.

The 1-0 win over Burnley at the weekend wasn’t enjoyable for anyone but at least put some crucial points on the board to be taken, and now they have dropped back down to 16th the game in hand that the Toffees hold on Nottingham Forest and Luton Town below them is looking crucial, with both just two points behind.

However, it appears Everton are facing the possibility of multiple points deductions next season anyway given the bizarre emergence that the most recent hearing hasn’t even reached a full decision on the current breach, as there remains a further dispute with the Premier League over payments related to the new stadium and another hearing yet to come.

To avoid a third-consecutive breach the likes of Jarrad Branthwaite and Amadou Onana would bring in significant transfer fees and are both coveted by various suitors.

But their departures would significantly weaken an Everton side which is once again struggling to put points on the board as it is.

It is one thing for clubs to sell their best players when that cash can be reinvested into the squad, but when it is repeatedly necessary to balance the books it will only continue to damage the side’s ability to compete.

For Evertonians every new unwelcome development seems to come with the promise of more further down the line, with the light at the end of the tunnel seemingly getting further away rather than closer.

In other Everton news, Sean Dyche and Kevin Thelwell previously rejected multiple Toffees signings due to the financial situation.
