Everton: Paul Ince slams Premier League ‘mockery’, there will be ‘uproar’
Paul Ince slammed the Premier League’s “mockery” of the Profit and Sustainability Rules process after Everton were handed a deduction of a further two points on Monday (8 April).
It has been reported, as per Kieran Maguire, that the Toffees could be at risk of facing a third PSR breach. However, the points deduction may only come into effect next season.
Everton are currently battling for Premier League survival, with Brentford, Nottingham Forest, and Luton Town all involved. Ince believes that there will be an “uproar” if the Toffees are not the team relegated.
Speaking live via talkSPORT on Monday (8 April), the former Manchester United midfielder said: “It’s not good, is it, especially for the fans? They had a great result at the weekend against Burnley, just as well because they’d have been in the bottom three without it.
“It has also been mentioned that Everton could have points deducted next season rather than this season. If Luton go down based on one point, because Everton haven’t had two points taken away from them, there’s going to be an uproar.
“From my experience, when I was manager at Reading last season, we were deducted six points and had another six points hanging over us, but we weren’t sure when those points were coming.
“It’s tough for the players. We would win a game and think, that’s three points [gone], but then there might have been another six points coming off.
“It’s going to be the same for Everton, the same for Luton [Town]. It is a mockery. As far as I’m concerned, Everton have broken the rules, so they get punished. But do it as quickly as possible.”
Will Everton survive the threat of Premier League relegation?
Sean Dyche’s side are currently sitting two places above the relegation zone, just two points above Nottingham Forest and Luton as the battle at the bottom of the table heats up.
Everton claimed an all-important win over Burnley on Saturday 6 April – a result that looks even more important after the most recent points deduction.
While the Toffees will want to do anything to avoid a drop to the Championship, especially with the amount of money currently being invested into the club, it is easy to understand Ince’s point of view.

The teams around Everton at the foot of the table will be fuming if they are to be relegated while Everton are set to begin the 2024/25 Premier League campaign with a points deduction.
Of course, that eventuality would suit the Goodison Park faithful in the short term if survival can be accomplished with seven matches remaining, but the club would be handed a blow before the season has even begun.
