Everton: Richard Keys tips ‘tainted’ Manchester City development after Toffees points deduction
Richard Keys has demanded Manchester City have their case settled after Everton received a second points deduction.
The beIN Sports anchor turned his ire on the European champions via Twitter on 8 April after the Toffees were hit by a second sanction this season, as two more points were stripped on top of their original six down from 10 on appeal.
With Everton and Nottingham Forest now both punished for profit and sustainability breaches Keys insisted Pep Guardiola’s all-conquering side must be next as they “run from perceived justice” and all their wins are “tainted”.
City currently have 115 charges levelled against them, all of which they dispute, relating to a period between 2009 and 2018, having been charged in February of last year [Sky Sports, 17 January].
Keys wrote: “Now that Everton & Forest have been dealt with it’s time to come to a decision on Manchester City – for the good of football.
“While they continue to run from perceived justice everything they win is tainted. Surely they want to remove that allegation? Settle the matter – now.”
Everton and Nottingham Forest both punished since Manchester City charged
The nature of the Everton, Forest and City cases are different, with the latter deemed a complicated historical investigation, and as they deny having done anything wrong it is possible that City will be cleared anyway.
But despite that it is the source of no-little disquiet that the Premier League can seemingly leave the champions’ situation pending for over a year now, while the Toffees have now been hit twice within the same season for just two charges.
Clearly it isn’t a like for like comparison, but given every one of the four commission or appeals hearings so between the Everton and Forest cases seem to come up with a new interpretation of everything it has meant nothing is like for like anyway.
And when factors seemingly conspire to crack down on Goodison Park as awkwardly and frequently as possible it is clearly going to be all the more galling that City can seemingly, for now at least, kick the can so far down the road while they hoover up trophies along the way.
The treble-winners’ own fans must be getting as tired as anyone about the endless questions on when some sort of resolution will be reached, so it would be in everyone’s best interests that it comes sooner rather than later.
However, if it as complicated as has been indicated it could end up with a botched hearing that goes nowhere and leaves other clubs even more outraged if the situation is rushed.
But when Everton appear to have a third and fourth points deduction on the cards in the coming months – another hearing is due to decide on an additional punishment from their second charge and there is a risk of a third-straight PSR breach next season still on the horizon – without an apparent threat of a first at City it is no wonder the questions keep being asked.
