Everton: Players will fume as contract concerns emerge following second points deduction

Everton players will be fuming if the club is relegated as a result of their points deductions, with potential contract issues on the cards according to Andy Townsend.

The former Chelsea midfielder insisted that the players will have clauses in their deals which could see their wages slashed if the club is relegated due to the mismanagement of those above them.

It has been said that this could cause issues in the dressing room with the players who are not at fault for the issues and therefore will feel hard done by if their wages are cut.

Speaking live on talkSPORT [9 April, 06:37], Townsend questioned: “It’s ridiculous isn’t it really? One thing that struck me is when you get relegated, the players lose a big chunk of their contracts. What happens if you’re relegated because of financial wrongdoing rather than your performance?

“You can imagine the Everton players if they ended up going down because of somebody else’s mismanagement above them, those players would have every right to turn round and say ‘you can’t cut my contract’.

“I think we’re now stepping into an area where the rules are going to have to be adjusted, otherwise it’s going to make a mockery of our seasons. You can’t keep knocking points off. It’s not right and it’s not fair on the paying punters.”

Andy Townsend fumes at Everton points deduction verdict

This all comes after Everton were handed another deduction, this time two points, for their breach of profit and sustainability rules, prompting a frenzy of questions and anger towards the Premier League.

Townsend’s questions about the players are entirely fair – why should they have to suffer if they are relegated based on points deductions brought upon them by the incompetence and mismanagement of Farhad Moshiri and the board at Goodison?

On top of that, Townsend insisted the rules have got to be adjusted to avoid the constant changing and deducting of points from clubs in the Premier League which is beginning to make a mockery of the league.

The point that deductions are not fair on fans who travel to see their teams every week was also reiterated once more, as the level of uncertainty and confusion surrounding league positions and performances continues to grow.
