Everton: 777 Partners scrap takeover plan as Premier League informed of new target

777 Partners have informed stakeholders that they now “expect” to complete the Everton takeover by the end of May, according to Sky News.

The outlet reported via their website on 10 April that the proposed new Toffees owners are trying to raise millions to complete the deal and have now pushed back their final target.

The American firm had been aiming to be in charge at Goodison Park by the end of this week, ahead of the 15 April Monday deadline to repay loans to MSP Sports Capital – one of the league’s conditions to grant takeover approval.

The Liverpool Echo had reported (10 April) that 777 wanted to be “in the directors’ box” by the time the club faced fellow points-sanctioned strugglers Nottingham Forest on 21 April.

But according to Sky News, with the firm still seeking to raise cash and having had to ask MSP for a deadline extension, that is no longer the plan.

A takeover is a complicated matter and changing plans aren’t necessarily a sign that it won’t go ahead, but at this late stage – five days before the loan repayment deadline – it won’t inspire confidence.

And given it is reportedly not likely that an extension with MSP will be agreed it is unclear how 777 “expect” to complete the deal next month.

That seemingly rests as much with MSP as it does Josh Wander and company, unless they can come into the £300m-plus they need to get the takeover done before the start of next week.

The Americans have throughout the months since agreeing to buy Farhad Moshiri’s shares in September maintained confidence that they will complete the deal, but their actions aren’t matching up with that sentiment.

The Premier League seems to have remained unsatisfied with the funding behind them over the past 30 weeks, and with the explicit conditions emerging late in March that made the MSP repayment deadline the next key date 777 are seemingly admitting they can’t do it.

If there is a final decision in the next few days it looks far more likely to be a negative one for Wander and company than a positive one, barring an unexpected development.
