Everton: New points deduction appeal could be heard in week of clash v Sheffield United

Everton may have to wait until the week starting 6 May to have their appeal heard against the most recent Premier League points deduction, according to iNews.

The online source reported [9 April] that, after the Toffees were handed a further two-point deduction due to a Profit and Sustainability breach, it was confirmed that the club would be appealing the punishment.

Sean Dyche and his squad could be preparing for a clash with Sheffield United (11 May) when the appeal is finally heard, facing the Blades at Goodison Park in their penultimate match of the season.

“Everton’s initial case was delayed due to the appeal for their first case still being ongoing, meaning Nottingham Forest’s case was heard first,” George Simms wrote.

“Forest’s verdict was announced on 18 March and they have since confirmed they will also appeal, which will take place before Everton’s second hearing.

“This means the Toffees’ appeal is unlikely to be heard until the end of April or early May, potentially the week beginning 6 May.”

PSR uncertainty likely to overshadow Everton performances

The Toffees will take confidence from their recent performances, drawing 1-1 with Newcastle United before claiming an all-important three points against Burnley on Saturday 6 April.

However, the overhanging worry about the club’s appeal will do no good for the team on the pitch, fighting against the risk of Premier League relegation for the third successive season.

Due to the most recent points deduction, Everton have now been deducted a total of eight points, leaving them just two points above Forest and Luton Town, meaning they are also two points above the dropzone.

While Dyche has more than enough talent at hand to lead the Toffees to safety, it will come as no help having to wait until the penultimate match of the season to learn their fate.

Crystal Palace, Brentford, Everton, Forest, Luton, Burnley and the Blades are all fighting to stay in the top division, and the surrounding teams are likely to be just as confused with the situation.

The Premier League is one of the best, most exciting divisions in the world, but the uncertainty over the points deductions and appeals only adds unneeded drama to an already tense battle.
