Pat Nevin rages over Everton development as ‘ludicrous’ Premier League admission shared
Pat Nevin believes the entire situation regarding the Everton points deduction saga has been a “shambles” by all those involved.
Writing on the BBC Sport website on Tuesday (9 April, 05:37pm), the pundit said he doesn’t expect teams to suffer punishments of the same nature in the future as he predicted there will be a radical change to the rules.
Although he hopes the matter has now been brought to an end following the Toffees’ latest two-point deduction, he admitted that the game could become “more ludicrous and unfair” in the future if rules continue to be made by people with no love for the sport.
“Everton have had another two points taken off them,” said Nevin. “It is painful, losing 10, getting four back and then losing another two. This entire story has felt like a shambles on all sides.
“As the rules change – and they most certainly will radically again – will teams who fall foul in future suffer the same extreme punishments? I doubt it, which will mean and feel like Everton, and to a degree Nottingham Forest, will have been singled out for especially egregious treatment.
“I hope this is now over, but I suspect the more that rules are being made and then judged by people with no feel for or love of the game, the more ludicrous and unfair the future of the game will be. The Premier League is a fantastic product that the world loves, despite – not because of – what the game’s controllers are currently doing.”
Have Everton been unfairly treated?
It’s been a strange and incredibly frustrating past few months for all those involved with Everton as the points deduction saga has continued to rumble on.
While the Toffees admitted their guilt to the spending breach charges, many do believe that the eight points they have been deducted in the same season have been a bit harsh.
The Premier League has handled the situation pretty poorly and there still doesn’t seem to be a set way to deal with the charges after Nottingham Forest’s breach was deemed to only be worth a four-point deduction.

If the rules do change over the coming months, then that could mean the two clubs in question are the only ones to be treated in such a manner, which wouldn’t be fair.
But given that the Blues posted another hefty loss in their latest accounts, they would probably welcome a change to the rules to avoid another charge coming their way further down the line.
