Everton: Kieran Maguire drops ‘long-lasting damage’ verdict as third point deduction mooted

Everton could be able to avoid a third point deduction and potentially save the Premier League from “long-lasting damage” in the process, according to Kieran Maguire.

The Toffees have already been deducted eight points for PSR breaches so far this season and reports suggest that another deduction could follow next term if they manage to dodge relegation from the Premier League.

However, football finance expert Maguire has suggested that the Premier League and the independent commission may be willing to drop those charges if Sean Dyche’s side decide not to appeal against their two-point deduction.

Speaking on The Price of Football (11 April, 12:05) he said: “Is there a case for saying, look folks let’s bang a couple of heads together. Everton drop the appeal and the Premier League or the commission say we’re going to drop the additional set of charges which could take place next season.

“That way, at least we’ve got certainty going into the final match of the season. People say the Premier League will suffer long-lasting damage. It won’t, it will suffer short-lasting damage. Football fans as we know have remarkably short memories.”

Will Everton be handed a third point deduction for further PSR breaches?

The financial situation at Goodison Park currently is far from ideal, but it does seem as though there could be a way that Dyche’s side won’t suffer again next season, assuming they’re not relegated this term.

It is in everyone’s interest that both the Toffees’ and Nottingham Forest’s appeals are heard and concluded sooner rather than later because at the moment, the Premier League risk not knowing who will be relegated at the end of the campaign.

Forest’s appeal will be heard first and if Everton were to drop their challenge in exchange for a clean slate next term, it would mean that everything will be decided completely come the final whistle on the last weekend of the campaign.

Whether either party would be at all interested in striking this sort of deal remains to be seen, but it could be a fruitful avenue for all involved. Hopefully, those in charge at Goodison will follow Maguire’s advice.
