Everton player ratings v Chelsea: Amadou Onana, Jordan Pickford awful

Everton suffered a humiliating 6-0 defeat at the hands of Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Monday, 15 April in the Premier League.

Cole Palmer scored four goals for the hosts with Nicolas Jackson and Alfie Gilchrist adding one each to make it six.

A livid Sean Dyche ended up making three substitutions at half-time with his side trailing 4-0.

Here are our player ratings from the game:

Jordan Pickford – 3

A terrible error for the third Palmer goal left the England number one in an embarrassing situation. He did well to deny him in the 55th minute from a one-on-one situation but it was not a good performance at all. He could’ve done better in two or three of the goals and it was clearly way below his normal standards.

Shocking defensive performance from Everton v Chelsea

Seamus Coleman – 3

Was shaky with his passes and according to Sofascore, could complete just seven passes with an accuracy of 70 per cent. He found it hard to deal with the pace Chelsea had on the counter attack and needed to be taken off at the break. At 35, one cannot expect him to be running up and down the pitch for the entire game.

James Tarkowksi – 3

Was caught ball watching for Jackson’s goal and he gave the striker the time of the day to turn and score which was shocking, to say the least. His lack of pace was evident in this game and he was caught off guard on numerous occasions. He switched off a lot and that’s not what he’s done all season so this was a highly uncharacteristic display from him.

Jarrad Branthwaite – 2

Got nutmegged by Palmer for the goal and looked shaky since the game began. It wasn’t an ideal start for the English centre-back. Looked extremely shaky with his passes as well and then picked up an injury in the second half which saw him play no further role in the game.

Vitalii Mykolenko – 3

Was all over the place with his passing and did not complete a single cross all game. Dyche decided to keep him on the field and bar a few attacking runs, there was nothing noteworthy he did. His passing accuracy was also terrible and these are not the standards that need to be set at Goodison Park. Was out of position for Gilchrist’s goal as well.

Ashley Young – 0

It was baffling how Young survived the half-time substitutions as he was one of the worst players on the pitch. He failed to complete any of his three attempted crosses, picked up a needless yellow card which meant he couldn’t really throw himself into a challenge for the rest of the game, and looked like he was hiding from the ball each time. Shocking display.

Everton midfield got overrun in the first half

Amadou Onana – 0

Made a poor call for the concession of Palmer’s goal and that was not ideal for someone returning from an injury. He was also a liability off the ball as he lost most of his duels and got bullied in the middle of the park. He showed no bravery to put his body on the line and win the ball back for his side. Did not appear to be playing like he cared for the side. Rightly taken off at the break.

Everton Amadou Onana
Everton will recoup a healthy sum from Aston Villa for Onana

James Garner – 2

Found it hard to deal with Palmer’s movement and lost his cool in the first half and made a cynical foul which saw him being booked. Much like Onana, he also lost the majority of his ground duels and that saw Chelsea’s midfield running rings around Everton. It made sense for Dyche to withdraw him at the break as well.

Dwight McNeil – 3

It was a surprise that he was kept on until the end as he looked leggy towards the end of the first half itself. Did not close down with the same intensity he had been or even properly track his runners and it was an underwhelming display from him.

Abdoulaye Doucoure – 5

Showed some intensity to lead the press and was pretty accurate with his passes but he was often bullied out of possession and struggled to deal with the likes of Jackson and Palmer. He also failed to complete a dribble but along with Beto, he was one of the standout Everton performers.

Beto – 5

Came extremely close to breaking the deadlock and not much can be blamed on him as it was an extremely tricky position. He did find the back of the net with a good header but was offside. If there was anyone keeping the Chelsea players on their feet, it was the Toffees striker. There was little Beto could do when 10 players behind him were terrible.

Subs

Nathan Patterson – 3

Harsh to criticise him for the goal as he pulled his hamstring which eventually saw the hosts adding a sixth goal. However, there was nothing in his performance that justified him being the first-choice right-back.

Andre Gomes – 5

Looked sharp from the minute he came on and there’s a good chance of the Toffees having some control in midfield had he started.

Michael Keane – 2

A poor performance off the bench and added little to no value to the side. Even picked up a booking for his exploits.

Jack Harrison – 4

Tried to make a few things happen but was definitely among the positives for the Toffees. Dyche needs to pick him over Young.

Ben Godfrey – N/A
