Everton v Chelsea: talkSPORT pundit destroys Jordan Pickford
Andy Townsend has savaged Jordan Pickford for his error that led to Cole Palmer’s goal for Chelsea v Everton.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side picked up a 6-0 victory at Stamford Bridge on 15 April with Palmer scoring four goals.
His pick of the bunch was when he scored from just ahead of the half-line courtesy of a Pickford error which meant the Chelsea winger had an open net to aim the ball into.
On the Premier League World Feed, Townsend, a talkSPORT pundit, said: (15 April, 21:17): “That was woeful from Pickford. You can see what he wanted to do but that’s just not how it’s done. That’s just average goalkeeping from him.”
Pickford cannot be doing this for Everton
Playing out from the back, a strategy where the goalkeeper is involved in starting attacks with their feet has become a common tactic in modern football.
While Pickford has shown proficiency in this aspect of the game in the past, his recent error highlights the risks involved.
The incident serves as a reminder that such a strategy can be high risk, high reward, and that mistakes can lead to devastating consequences.
Pickford will need to learn from this experience and be more cautious in his decision-making moving forward.
Although playing out from the back can be an effective way to build attacks and maintain possession, it requires a high level of skill and understanding of the game situation.
In this instance, Pickford’s decision-making and execution were not up to par, and he will need to reassess his approach to avoid similar mistakes in the future.
