Everton stars face major wage cuts as points deduction excuse slammed in shameful Chelsea loss
Simon Jordan has summarily dismissed the idea that Everton players can excuse themselves for the performance at Chelsea in the wake of another points deduction.
Speaking live on talkSPORT (16 April) the morning after the 6-0 hammering at Stamford Bridge he said the Toffees “should be bloody well ashamed of themselves” if they were minded to pin the result on having two more points stripped last week (8 April), and claimed the threat of hefty wage-cuts if they get relegated will shock them into action.
He claimed that “nobody makes Jordan Pickford pass the ball straight to a Chelsea player” after the keeper’s error which led to Cole Palmer’s hat-trick goal, and suggested as long as the squad is getting paid they should get on with their jobs.
Jim White asked (10.20am): “Did we see a reflection of that second punishment do you think, when heads were down right from the start and you think it’s as many as Chelsea want to score on the night?”
Jordan answered: “Well if we did then they should be bloody well ashamed of themselves because they have a responsibility to do what they can do. They can only control the controllables, it should not be allowed to be an excuse for them.
“Because if they want to have some pain then they can all land in the Championship and get Championship wages, and they’ll soon liven themselves up when that realisation lands upon them…
“If they want to use it, Jim, then they can use it. They’ve got a built-in, priced-in, baked-in excuse, but they don’t because the footballers live in their own little world, as long as their pay cheque is coming in at the end of every single month.”
Simon Jordan harsh on Everton after collapse at Stamford Bridge?
To an extent it is true that whatever is going off the pitch Sean Dyche and the players should be focused on what happens on it, and at this stage their performances is all that can keep them from relegation.
Pending the appeal of the second deduction they should at least now know that no more will now be taken this season, even if they could start next term bottom assuming they stay up.
But when the likes of Pickford and Jarrad Branthwaite are being made to look foolish by Palmer, for the third and first goals respectively, then surely the never-ending uncertainty around the club must be weighing on even the most important key men.

Granted, Chelsea’s own star decided to have the game of his life and things could have been very different if Beto had been able to turn in Seamus Coleman’s cross with the score goalless, but there will have to be more of a resistance put up than that over the final weeks, whether the position the players are in is fair or not, as the game was reminiscent of a similar thrashing away in London two seasons ago when Frank Lampard’s side capitulated at Tottenham.
While the takeover situation has been extended again after last-gasp Farhad Moshiri talks and there are further hearings queuing up into the future to deal with financial disputes the situation around Everton doesn’t look set to change any time soon, so while those are anything but ideal circumstances for the team to perform it appears they have little choice.
