Everton: Amadou Onana slammed by Phil McNulty for what he was seen doing v Chelsea

Phil McNulty says it was not a good look for Everton midfielder Amadou Onana to be seen laughing with a Chelsea player during Monday’s (15 April) 6-0 loss.

Onana was seen in a jovial mood with Malo Gusto as the players made their way down the tunnel at half-time with the Toffees four goals down.

The Belgium international put in a terrible performance in the first half at Stamford Bridge and did not come back out for the second period.

When that moment was pointed out to McNulty, the BBC chief football writer responded on his personal X account [16 April]: “I missed that but that is not great.”

Amadou Onana linked with Everton exit

McNulty had made the point earlier in his X debate that he is unsure why Onana is thought of so highly by other clubs.

The 22-year-old has been linked with the likes of Arsenal, Manchester United and Bayern Munich – among others – over the past 12 months.

However, on the basis of his performance for Everton this season, particularly in recent weeks, those transfer links seem strange.

Everton cannot afford for one player to be carried, and that was the case in the opening 45 minutes against Chelsea.

Onana was not alone in having a seriously bad day, but he was particularly bad and his place in the starting line-up may now be under threat.

The incident in question with Malo certainly does not help his cause, especially when the emotions of Everton fans watching the game were so high.

The only way Onana can make amends is by knuckling down and showing his form of old between now and the end of the season.

In other Everton news, Alan Myers has shared a “disaster” scenario that the Toffees simply have to avoid amid plenty of on and off-the-field concerns.
