Everton: Paul Merson shares new Nottingham Forest verdict after Luton loss live on Sky Sports
Paul Merson has insisted Luton Town need to hope Nottingham Forest can beat Everton and then beat them too if they want to stay in the Premier League this season.
The former Arsenal midfielder shared his view that Luton are now facing five cup finals, but if Sean Dyche’s side wins their next two games, they will be left behind.
If, as Merson suggested, Forest win on 21 April and then Luton can win as the Toffees visit Kenilworth Road, they will leapfrog them out of the relegation zone.
Speaking live on Sky Sports News [20 April, 17:32], Merson shared: “They’ve got five more cup finals. In that cup final, they lost, but now they’ve got another five. They have got to hope Forest win and then they go and beat Everton, then it’s game on again.
“It’s got to be better than that. They’re still in it, but they need Forest to beat Everton, then if they beat Everton they go above them. If Everton go and win and they beat them, they’ll be in the same position. For me, it’s a big game tomorrow.”
Can Luton Town stay up at Everton’s expense?
As Merson detailed, two losses in their next two games would see the club fall into the relegation zone, but to be clear, if they lose to Forest and Luton, they won’t deserve any difference. These are must-win games and they cannot afford anything else.
The club’s additional goal difference – with 12 goals separating them from Luton – could prove crucial as the season draws to its closing stages. With six games left to play for the Toffees, five for Forest and four for Luton, anything could happen.
That uncertainty will not please Dyche who would want his side to be home and hosed by now, although a final-day win against Bournemouth last season saw him keep his team up and a similar scenario could be on the cards here.

Ultimately, both Forest and Everton have been left in this situation due to points deductions as a result of PSR breaches and with appeals both in place against the most recent calls, they could prove the deciding factor in the relegation battle.
